Hindi Divas – Why is it so Important?
September 14th, 2017
Hindi Divas is being celebrated with full fervor in India today. This day has an important place in the History of India. On this day in 1949, The Constitution of India had declared Hindi (Devanagari Script) as the official language of our country.
14 September is also the birthday of the accomplished Hindi Stalwart Beohar Rajendra Simha. The Framers of the Indian Constitution had selected this day to make the 50th birthday of this great legend memorable.
The journey of Hindi being established as the official language of India was not smooth. From all parts of India, Hindi Stalwarts including Stalwart Beohar Rajendra Simha, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Maithili Sharan Gupt, debated on this issue in the Parliament. Finally the decision was reflected on the Constitution on 26 January 1950 under the Article 343 of the Indian Constitution. At present, there are 22 Scheduled languages of India, among which two are used officially, English and Hindi.
On 25 March 2015, the Ministry of Home Affairs had renamed two of the annual awards given away on this day - Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Puraskar (1986) which is now named Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar and Rajiv Gandhi Rashtriya Gyan-Vigyan Maulik Pustak Lekhan Puraskar, which is now called Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar.
