1993 Mumbai Blasts: Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan Sentenced to Lifetime Jail

The special TADA Court has passed on death and lifetime sentence concerning the accused directly involved with the 1993 Mumbai Bomb Blasts. While Taher Merchant and Feroz Khan were sentenced to death, Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan were sentenced to lifetime imprisonment. Another convict, Riyaz Siddiqui has been sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Mustafa Dossa, whom the police had assumed as the key conspirator had died prior to the sentencing.

CBI special public prosecutor Deepak Salvi had appealed death sentence for Merchant. On the other hand, he had pressed the judge for lifetime imprisonment in the case of Salem and Karimullah.

The first and main trial of 123 accused in the 1993 Mumbai Blast Case ended in 2006 with the conviction of 100. Yakub Memon was hanged in 2015. He was the brother of prime absconding accused Tiger Memon.

According to Salvi, Merchant was proven guilty of "actively participating in several meetings" and "must be held directly responsible for the bomb explosions which were deeply rooted in the conspiracy discussed in various meetings in Dubai".

Similarly, he also pointed out that Karimullah's was an active member of the Ejaz Pathan gang. He also added that his active role involved landing of arms and ammunitions in Shakhadi.
